# Changing your personal information

> What you can update yourself, what needs documentation, and which documents we accept.

## Change these yourself, in two minutes

Your **email address**, **phone numbers** and **mailing address** are all editable in uPortal360
under **Contact Info** — see
[Updating your contact information](/signing-in/updating-contact-information).

  **Keeping these current is part of your agreement, not a courtesy.** On a private education loan
  you must notify us in writing of a change of name or principal residence **within 30 calendar
  days**. And if our emails stop reaching you, an out-of-date address is the usual reason.

## These need documentation

Your **name**, **date of birth** and **Social Security number** cannot be changed online, because
changing them changes who the account belongs to.

    Different changes need different documents. We will tell you which one covers yours rather than
    you guessing and sending the wrong thing.

    Mail a copy of the document showing the information you want changed. **Send copies, never
    originals** — documents sent to us are not returned.

## Documents we accept

Any of these, as long as it shows the information you are asking us to change:

* Social Security card
* W-2 form
* Current driver's license
* Passport
* Birth certificate
* Unexpired U.S. military ID
* State ID
* U.S. military discharge papers (Form DD214)
* U.S. Certificate of Naturalization (Form N-550 or N-570)
* U.S. Certificate of Citizenship (Form N-560 or N-561)
* Court order
* Alien Registration Card (Form I-551 or I-151)
* Marriage certificate

Write your **Account Number** on the copy so it reaches your account.

## If your name changed because of marriage or divorce

A marriage certificate or court order covers it. Your Account Number does not change, and neither do
your terms — only the name on the account.
