# If you are called to active duty

> Your rights under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act on an account UAS services, and how to claim them.

If you are called to active duty, the **Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA)** may reduce what
your account costs you. It applies to the credit accounts UAS services — retail installment
contracts, retail installment credit agreements, bank installment loans and similar credit
products.

<Warning>
  **The protections apply only to an account you opened before you went on active duty.** An
  agreement signed after your active duty began is not covered.
</Warning>

## Who is covered

* Active duty members of the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard
* Reserve members serving on active duty
* National Guard members mobilized under federal orders for more than 30 consecutive days
* Active duty commissioned officers of the Public Health Service and NOAA

Some protections extend to dependents. If you think that applies to you, ask — it is looked at case
by case.

## What you get

|                                        |                                                                                                                                                |
| -------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Your interest rate is capped at 6%** | For the whole period of your military service, and for one year afterwards |
| **It is backdated** | To the start date on your orders. Interest you were charged above 6% since then is refunded to you, or put toward your principal — your choice |
| **Your payment is recalculated** | We re-amortize the account so your monthly payment drops by the amount of interest forgiven |
| **Fees are waived** | All of them, for the protected period |
| **Your property is protected** | We cannot cancel or accelerate the agreement, or repossess property, during your service without a court order |

You still need to make your monthly payments. SCRA lowers what you owe; it does not pause it.

<Info>
  **Asking for SCRA protection cannot be held against you.** We will not deny you credit, revoke
  credit, or change your terms because you claimed your rights under the Act.
</Info>

## How to claim it

<Steps>
  <Step title="Write to us">
    A written request is required. A letter, or an email, saying you are on active duty and asking
    for SCRA protection on your account.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Send a copy of your orders">
    Your enlistment orders, or the military orders calling you to active duty. A letter from your
    commanding officer with your full name and enough detail to identify you also works.
  </Step>

  <Step title="We apply it, backdated">
    To the start date on your orders — the date the notice was provided, for National Guard and
    Reserve members.

  Have your Account Number and your orders to hand. We will tell you where to send them.

## When you can ask

Any time during your active duty service, **and up to 180 days after** you are released or your
service ends. That deadline is real, so do not leave it. Within it, asking later costs you nothing
— the rate reduction is backdated to the start date on your orders either way.

## If someone is handling this for you

Anyone holding a valid power of attorney for you can exercise these rights on your behalf. That is
often the practical route during a deployment.

<Note>
  **This page covers accounts UAS services.** Other creditors have their own processes, and federal
  student loans have separate military benefits that are not administered here. The
  [CFPB's servicemember pages](https://www.consumerfinance.gov/consumer-tools/servicemembers/) cover
  the wider picture.
