# If your application is pending

> What a pending credit application means, who can clear it, and the 30-day limit for doing it.

**Pending is not a denial.** It means the check that confirms who you are did not finish, and we
need one more thing from you before we can give an answer.

Your application is still open. Most pending applications are cleared by the applicant, on their
own, in a few minutes.

<Warning>
  You have **30 days from the day you applied**. The clock does not restart when your application
  goes pending. After 30 days the application closes and you would have to start over.
</Warning>

## Why applications pend

We check two separate things, in order.

**First, can we find your credit report and does it match what you entered?** If we cannot retrieve
a report, or the details do not line up, we stop here. Nothing about your identity has been
questioned yet — this is a lookup problem.

**Second, are you who you say you are?** Once we have your report, a check runs against your
identifying information. If it does not come back clean, we ask you to confirm your identity.

Your application will only pend if it otherwise meets the finance program's requirements. We do not
pend applications that would not qualify. That is worth knowing before you spend time on it.

## Find your screen

Match what you are looking at to the right page. They are listed in the order these things
normally happen.

<Columns cols={2}>

    "We could not pull accurate underwriting information." We cannot find your credit report.
  </Card>

  </Card>

  <Card title="Identity Verification" icon="circle-question" href="/applying/identity-questions">

  </Card>

  <Card title="Upload a photo ID" icon="id-card" href="/applying/uploading-your-id">

  </Card>

  <Card title="Currently Pending — please call" icon="phone" href="/applying/still-pending">
    A phone number and a reference number. The last step, once the others have been tried.
  </Card>
</Columns>

<Tip>
  **Work down that list, not straight to the phone.** Each step clears far more applications than
  the one after it, and a representative will start by asking you the same things.
</Tip>

## What happens at the end

| Outcome                   | What it means                                                                                                                       |
| ------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Approved** | The check cleared. Your application continues as normal. |
| **Pending - Expired** | 30 days passed without the pend being resolved. You may receive a Statement of Credit Denial, Termination, or Change explaining it. |
| **Application - Expired** | 30 days passed without us ever retrieving a valid credit report. |
| **Declined** | A credit decision was made. You will receive a letter within 30 days with the reasons. |

A pend that expires is not the same as a decline. It means we never got what we needed to decide,
and you are free to apply again.
